CHRONOLOGY OF THE HOLY BIBLE

 

THE BOOK OF GENESIS

God creates the Heavens and the Earth

Adam and Eve sin and bring about the Fall of Man in the Garden of Eden

Cain and Abel are born, Cain betrays his brother and leaves for the Land of Nod

Adam begets sons and daughters with Eve, and begins a line that stretches down to Noah

God sends a Great Flood to wash away humanity- Noah is spared and builds the Ark

God makes a Covenant with Noah, and Noah's family is fruitful and creates the different nations

The Tower of Babel is built, an attempt by humans to touch the sky, God confuses tongues

God tells Abraham to leave his home in Ur and go the Land of Canaan, The Covenant is entered

After some time in Egypt and wandering, Abraham fathers Ishmael with Hagar, who exiles herself

The Covenant of circumcision is entered into by Abraham- now father of a new Nation

The Lord God visits Abraham and Sarai, telling them that they will have a child

God destroys Sodom and Gommorah

Abraham has a son, Issac and God tests him by commanding him to sacrafice Issac

Jacob steals Esau's blessing from Abraham on his deathbed, and flees

After many adventures, Jacob meets the Lord God and wrestles with Him

God blesses Jacob and renames him Israel "man who has wrestled with God"

Israel makes a Coat of Many Colors for his favorite son Joseph, angering the other kids

Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers and leaves for Egypt Land, where he dreams

Joseph's dreams inspire him and the pharaoh of Egypt has dreams also, Joseph helps him

God asks Israel to go to Egypt as a famine is in Canaan

Israel dies- revealing to Joseph that one day God will lead the Israelites back to Canaan

 

THE BOOK OF EXODUS

 The Israelites are made slaves of the pharaoh in Egypt for 400 years

Moses is born in Egypt and grows up in the palace of the Egyptian Pharaoh

Moses discovers he is an Israelite Hebrew and kills a guard that is beating an Israelite

Moses flees from the Pharaoh into the desert scrub and marries the daughter of Jethro

While living with his wife, Moses is visited by God as a burning bush, he is told to save his people

Moses returns to Egypt and with the help of the Power of God aims to free the Israelites

Pharaoh Ramses II will not let them go, and Moses brings forth plagues upon Egypt

As Pharaoh refuses still, Moses unleashes the plague on the firstborn sons, the Passover occurs, Ramses relents

Pharaoh Ramses changes his mind, and Moses calls upon God for a miracle- just in time, the Red Sea opens

During the Exodus, God feeds the hungry Israelites with Manna from heaven and water from the rock

Moses goes atop Mt. Sinai and recieves from God the tablets containing the Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments, along with Mosaic Law, become known- God reveals his glory to Moses

After problems with idolotry, Moses destroys the tablets but later they are reconstituted

A tabernacle is set up and incense is burnt as an offering along the way- for 40 years of wandering

 

THE BOOK OF LEVITICUS

 The Lord teaches Moses way offerings should be given, the methods and what is appropriate

The Laws are taught to Moses who teaches them to Aaron and the Israelites

Cleanliness, clean and unclean foods, modes of behavior and other values are taught to Moses

Punishments for sins, rules for the priests and Levites, and the holidays of Passover and the Sabbath are revealed

 

THE BOOK OF NUMBERS

A great census is taken of the Israelites, defense military rolls are begun- families are sorted out

Some more rules are revealed, rules for unfaithful wives and for purity

At long last, the Israelites return towards the Promised Land- explorers move ahead- leaders of the tribes

The Israelites complain to Moses and some wish to return to Egypt- for there are warrior tribes in Canaan

Moses silences them and reveals God's Laws for unintended sins

The people are rebelling against Moses, they are blocked by the King of Edom, and stay at Kadesh

Things get better, but enemies gather, Israelites move to the land of the Amorites and then to Moab

A socerer named Belaam uses oracles to determine the course of action, until God reveals the way

Issues ensue in Moab, women of Moab seduce Israeli men, and Joshua is chosen to succeed Moses

More learning- the Lord God reveals more Laws and ways of living for every Israelite

The entire trip is outlined now in the Bible for a summation

As the Israelites approach the River Jordan across from Jericho, the land is divided by tribe

 

THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY

The Israelites grumble against the Lord, he had brought them from Egypt to be destroyed by others

The Lord leads the Children through many battles and they succeed with His help

The Lord commands that Moses will NOT cross the Jordan River with the Israelites, Joshua will lead

The Laws, rules and the Commandments are reviewed again for the Israelites

The Lord commands Israelites to fight the others- 7 tribes stronger than they- against all odds

The Lord reminds the Children that it is NOT because of their righteousness that they are being given Canaan

The Lord commands that the Children fear and love Him, not to commit idoletry and to remember the Covenant

The Lord commands Israel to destroy all the high places of the others, the alters and idols- and to worship Him

Rules about keeping servents and giving them blessings as thou has been blessed are revealed

The Lord tells of a prophet that He will send- and to set up a Kingdom with a king selected by Him

Family and inheritance laws are revealed- and what to do in war when the enemy is greater

Curses and rewards are outlined, the Lord tells Moses that the day of his death is near

Moses blesses the tribes and then dies on Mt. Nebo, east of the River Jordan
